Frequently asked questions

What does CountIDS do?

It works out the USPTO size fee for an information disclosure statement (IDS) under 1.17(v). It keeps a ledger for each application and prices your next IDS against the IDSs already filed.

How do I add IDSs that are already filed?

Open an application and choose Add IDS history. You can fetch the filings from the USPTO, upload IDS PDFs (several at once), or enter a filing by hand if you do not have the PDF.

Which PDFs can it read?

Fillable IDS forms (with the XFA layer intact) are read exactly. Flattened or scanned PDFs are read with OCR which is typically very accurate.

Why do I have to review the counts after uploading a PDF or importing from the USPTO?

The counts are read automatically and may be wrong, especially from scanned copies. Each file is shown on a review screen first, and nothing is recorded until you confirm it. Only the counts matter for the fee; the references themselves do not need to be checked, and any errors they include will not affect the fee calculation. Where the IDS filing date was read from the document, check that too.

How is the fee worked out?

CountIDS adds up the references across every IDS in the application. Only the IDS that takes the total past 50, 100 or 200 owes a fee, of $200, $500 or $800, less what was already paid for earlier IDSs. An IDS filed before 19 January 2025 owed no fee, but its references still count. Lastly, if an earlier payment looks too high or too low, the ledger adds a note.

What does "Fetch from the USPTO" do?

It first lists the IDS filings detected in the application's file wrapper. You tick the ones you want, and each is read and shown for review before it is recorded. It works for published applications only. A filing already in your ledger is not automatically ticked, and if you fetch it you can create a duplicate (not recommended) or overwrite the existing entry. The USPTO limits how fast files can be downloaded, so a long list can take a few minutes to fetch.

Can I edit or delete an application?

Yes. On the ledger, Edit history lets you correct the dates, reference counts, fees and notes, or remove an IDS. The pencil beside the application number edits the applicant and the title. The bin icon on the applications list deletes an application and every IDS in it permanently, after you confirm.

How long do my uploaded files wait?

After a file finishes processing, you have 48 hours to review it. Files you have not saved to the ledger by then are deleted. If processing a batch is expected to take more than 5 minutes, we email you when all its documents are ready, with the deadline in your local time.
